Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cindy Thibodeau, owner of MOOV Physiotherapy, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

MOOV is a community. We are a small boutique physiotherapy clinic, holistic in nature. While we may be in the busy downtown core of Ottawa, we have carved out an experience for our patients that is personable, warm, and healing in itself. We want everyone to feel at home here from the moment they walk through the doors into our modern yet calming space!

Our patients choose us because they are like-minded individuals seeking personable care and autonomy in their treatment plans. They are enterprising and go-getters, which is why our exercise-based treatment is perfect for their busy and high achieving lifestyles… not to mention our unique specialty programs, which blend physiotherapy and fitness, including MOOV to Run, MOOV Strong, and MOOV Yoga. We truly believe there is something here for anyone and everyone.

Tell us about yourself

A spark was lit for me to start my own business from the individuals I had met on my journey along the way. I wanted to help more people within the community live their best lives, and the only way to do this was to create something truly unique.

From there, it only seemed natural to welcome fellow Physiotherapy colleagues who are like-minded in their passions for holistic healing and craving growth within their own careers. It’s really the people, both colleagues, and clients, that motivate me each and every day and instill so much pride in what we do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Without a doubt, my biggest accomplishment with MOOV is the team that has been built. 2021 was an amazing year for us despite the pandemic (I realize how rare and fortunate it is to say that!) We saw so much growth and were able to bring on four new amazing team members, rounding out an incredible duo that was with me from the beginning stages of MOOV!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, one of the most challenging aspects has been getting it done versus getting it done perfectly. Having a tendency to lean towards perfectionism is something that, as a business owner, I’ve realized I need to let go of (a little bit!).

The reality is that while I could spend so much time building out the ‘perfect’ plan, program, resource… there is such a richer value in putting things out there and trying things before they are perfected. This way, we are able to improve our business experiences using the feedback of our clients and colleagues, allowing things to be tailored to what our community really wants and needs. How great is that!?

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be adaptable - always have your plan, but be ready to pivot as needed!
  2. Find a mentor - this is so important in keeping yourself and expectations grounded!
  3. Find a balance in your time - evaluate what is a priority for you as an owner and know when to delegate to trusted team members!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

My last piece of advice would be to find a community of other small business owners. There is so much value to be found in shared experiences, best practices, and supporting one another through the ups and downs of business ownership (though there are MANY more ups than downs!)
