Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Donna Outtrim, Owner of moonjube art, located in Spruce Grove, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run an art business selling my own artwork. My customers are people who share a love of dreams, beauty, art, and magic.

Tell us about yourself

I started making collage art about four years ago just for fun. I was going through a period of depression, grief, and facing some health issues, so I turned to art to channel my heartache into something creative. I started sharing my art on Instagram as a way to catalogue and document the things I was creating. I definitely was not expecting to build an audience of people who resonated with what I was putting out there. I think what motivates me is knowing that there are other people in the world who can see themselves in my creations. Knowing that I am not alone in my struggle to exist in this world. That others see me, and I see them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment is the satisfaction of knowing that I built this world all on my own. I had an idea, and I followed through with that idea time and time again, and it has led me to where I am now. It's amazing to watch an idea grow into something you could never have imagined.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Learning when to take breaks and how to strike a healthy balance between work/relaxation. I tend to be hyper-focused on things until I see them through until completion, making it very challenging to take breaks. I learned the hard way by injuring myself! Listen to your body and take breaks, and rest when you need to.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Shoot for the stars! Do it because you can. Be patient with yourself, your growth, and your progress. Always remind yourself of your WHY, which will help keep you going.
