Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Monique Nicole Holmes, Founder of Monique Nicole Enterprises, LLC., located in Newport News, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the Principal Decorator of Monique Nicole Interiors, a full-service and e-decor, residential interior design firm. I am also the lead Business Coach at Employee to Designer, a hybrid coaching program, and Interior Design Business Coach, where I teach emerging women in design and how to build and grow a 6-figure residential interior design business.

Tell us about yourself

I started out working in the corporate space in advertising, working for some of the top advertising firms in the world. After ten years of working in advertising, I got burnt out and wanted to do something that helped people and fed my creative gifts and talents. Coming from a family of highly creative women, my mother is an artist, and my grandmother was an Interior Designer, I decided to make a complete career change in 2012. I went back to school, got my Interior Decorating degree, and the rest was history. In two years, I was able to replace my 6-figure income from my job with my part-time income from my decorating business. After four years of growing a thriving 6-figure design business, I started Employee to Designer to help other emerging women start their own design firms, based on my proven success blueprint.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to create the life that I want and deserve so that I can truly enjoy my time with my family while doing what I love - Interior Design & Coaching.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Balancing. When you have a passion for entrepreneurship and helping others, it takes a tremendous amount of effort, skill, and discipline to balance work, life, and family in a healthy way.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get clear on what you want.
  2. Believe in yourself, as no one else will, and create a life of faith and discipline.
  3. Go after what you want by seeking the information and knowledge to master your craft and be the best at what you do.
