What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own a small hand-crafted candle business. My customers are those who like quality, long-lasting products.
Tell us about yourself
I was working a temporary job that I lost in April of 2020 due to COVID. Looking for something to keep myself busy while exploring the possibility of getting another job, I was looking for something to keep me busy. I was an avid fan of Bath and Body Works, but I knew that I was going to have to curve my habit. I looked up candle-making as a hobby, and it turned out to be something I was good at. The same day that I started my business, I got sick and lost vision in my left eye and was later diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder. My motivation to continue is my family, to be able to make supplemental income to support them while being able to make my own hours and work when I can.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is starting and maintaining a business through the pandemic.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Because I started my business during the pandemic, product availability and inflation have been my biggest issues,
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a business plan! That will help things run smoothly and efficiently.
- Make sure your personal credit is good. More than likely, you will have to personal guarantee for any business credit you apply for.
- Use your resources. The more you know, the more successful you will be.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
My health has been a challenge, but I don't let it stop me. I push through when I can, but I know when not to push my limits. KNOW WHEN TO STOP! Your mental health and well-being will be tested as a business owner. One of the biggest parts of being successful is to take care of yourself.
