Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sonya Frazier, Founder of Modus Life, LLC, located in Tampa, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Modus Life, LLC is a wellness consulting company that educates and empowers primarily women, especially of color, to reimagine self-care. I partner with my clients to create an individualized and sustainable practice through individual consultations. I am truly passionate about disrupting the notion that self-care cannot be a daily practice. The motto of Modus Life, LLC is “Together, we reimagine your new way of life.” I have consulted with various media outlets, including ABC News, Essence, and Working Mother Magazine, on an array of mental health-related topics such as grief, the importance of setting intentions, and advice on parenting the modern teenager.

Tell us about yourself

I am a licensed mental health counselor in Florida and a self-care specialist. I recognized my passion for empowering others to show up as their best selves at an early age while growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio. I pursued and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. I continued my education at the University of South Florida. I completed my Master of Arts degree in Counselor Education with a specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. My principle philosophy is that change happens by meeting the client where they are with an unbiased and non-judgmental mindset. I take pride in assisting people in identifying, exploring, and acting on the infinite possibilities of their lives within a multicultural context.

My wealth of both personal and professional experience regarding the importance of routine self-care for optimal wellness motivates me to do what I do each day. There is always something happening outside of our control, but the one thing we can always control is how we respond. I help my clients find the tools and skills to endure life’s challenges by using self-care as a means of self-cultivation and self-preservation. As I often say, self-care is the best care.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is sticking with it. I made a few pivots with the company since I founded it in 2013 but I stuck with it. I am proud of the work that I am doing in the wellness space and the impact I am having on helping others along on their self-care journey. I say journey because there is no end point to your wellness or self-care needs. It is something that is a continuous process of learning and relearning yourself, your needs, and ways to honor yourself and meet those needs.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is balancing your time. As a solopreneur, it can be challenging to take breaks/time off from work or balance other responsibilities with work. There is a pressure to produce and get results to keep the business alive. For some, this may mean working long hours or 7 days a week. I have found it important to stay connected with other business owners for support, encouragement, and accountability.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get Started - all of the conditions and factors are never going to be perfect. Start where you are with what you have.
  2. Learn through the process- you will not have everything figured out, and that’s okay. Take every opportunity as a learning experience.
  3. Remember your purpose- Remember why you started, the vision for your business, and the impact you wanted to have. Some days or years can be challenging, but keep the faith, believe in your gift, and keep going.
