Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Modesta Mahiga, Founder of Modesta Mahiga LLC., located in Fairfax, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Management Consulting. I help mid-sized business leaders and organizations increase effectiveness and performance to scale globally.

Tell us about yourself

A lawyer turned human resource professional, my consulting business started as a response to problems I saw in the market, which I had the desire, competencies, and network to serve, but was unable to through my employer. This was in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. From a recruitment and training company, my firm evolved to support organizations with change management and organizational and business development services.

Once in the U.S., I pivoted to online consulting and coaching, which has allowed me to serve a global clientele whilst taking care of my school-aged children and doing my MBA.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Apart from revenues generated, being able to engage policymakers, the media, academia, and multilateral organizations has given me and my business the opportunity to contribute to strengthening the business and labor market and create opportunities for millions of graduates taking both the employment and entrepreneurship routes.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being able to transition from working in your business to working on your business. Most business owners start a business in an area of passion, and while they may be good at the technical know-how of delivering their products and services, they may not be as proficient nor passionate about business management.

It takes great self-awareness and honesty about one’s limitations in ability and capacity to invest in building a support system of people and management information systems that can help the business operate efficiently.

As a vision-bearer and owner, it is, however, critical to stay on top of the business so that it does not veer in a different direction than what you had in mind when you set it up.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. To start - Ask yourself “why” and make sure you have a strong enough reason and a clear direction to anchor your strategies.
  2. To run - Invest in building systems from the start to operate with transparency, efficiency, consistency, and measurable metrics.
  3. To Grow - Engage Coaches and Consultants that will expose you and support you to increase your leadership and management effectiveness, as well as to build the structure and systems that can sustain the change and instability as you and your business grow beyond your current level of operation.
