What's your business, and who are your customers?
Our business is called Modern Hops. We are the only independent craft distributor in Georgia. Our customers are both suppliers (breweries, wineries, distilleries) and retailers (bottle shops, liquor stores).
Tell us about yourself
About 7 years ago, the Georgia beer scene was behind the times. I traveled a lot for my job and started visiting breweries wherever I went. I am fascinated by all the different beer styles and flavors that can be produced. The quality was better than anything I ever had. I wanted to share these great beers with everybody I knew. It turns out the way to legally do that was to become a beer distributor. I am motivated by my team and the people that keep this business alive: the retailer and supplier partners, our drivers, our sales team, and our operations staff. I am driven to make sure they all have jobs they enjoy and can support their families.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being able to provide jobs that people enjoy. We built a brand and a company that our employees believe in. They are motivated by more than money.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Learning that nobody cares as much as you. No matter how much somebody gets paid or how much responsibility with your company, it is just a job to them.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Persistence: Learn how to be a persistent salesperson for your company.
- Time Management: you will get pulled in 1000 directions daily. Stay focused and use your time wisely.
