Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jamie MoCrazy, Founder of MoCrazy Strong Inc., located in Park City, UT, USA.

What's your organization, and who are your members?

MoCrazy Strong is a nonprofit that focuses on bettering the lives of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) survivors and their family caregivers. We do this through working on projects to raise awareness and working to change protocols at the trauma centers, state, and federal levels. We also provide clinical education on TBI programs such as family involvement and peer-to-peer specialists. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2.5 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year. An estimated 5.3 million Americans are living with long-term disabilities as a result of brain injury, and millions more are suffering from the residual effects of less severe TBIs. Anyone who suffers a TBI nationwide or their family caregivers might be recipients of resources or protocol changes. So far, we have worked with different trauma centers and legislation in North America. We hope to expand to include UN work on raising awareness of TBI to the world and ways to combat the deficits created at the acute stages of TBI with actions that take little or no cost.

Tell us about yourself

What first got us into the business behind TBI was when I crashed at World Tour Finals, the Whistler Ski and Snowboard Festival and went immediately into a natural coma, paralyzed on the right side of my body due to damage to my brain stem. When I arrived at the VGH hospital, my prognosis was bleak; however, due to a lot of factors, I lived. Not only did I live, but I was alive to thrive! My recovery was miraculous, and with a deeper understanding of neuroplasticity, we know more miraculous TBI recoveries can be created! This betters the individual who suffered a TBI, their family, and society as a whole! According to a study by Finkelstein and colleagues, the cost to society from traumatic brain injury is 76.5 billion annually. Anything I can do to save and change lives rewards and motivates me through the days I feel frustrated and think I could have just taken an easier path through life... and then I hear personal messages that make me cry and remind me that since I received so much support and opportunities during my recovery if I can use my platform to save and change lives... well it's worth the bad days.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Changing mindset and opportunities for millions to recover after any unexpected trauma, specifically a Traumatic Brain Injury.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Realizing how long it takes to see results. I've also learned that even if you think someone is an amazing person, they might not be the right fit for a project, and it's ok.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient. That is something I am still working on every day!
  2. Everyone is not the right fit to work at your company; it's ok to say no.
  3. Focus on your life and your happiness outside of running the business. The happier and more complete you feel, the easier it will be to work through all the roadblocks you face creating your business.
