Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mimi Lau, owner of mochii, located in Manhattan, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business focuses on rice flour-based desserts with assorted fillings such as paste or ice cream, all handmade in-house. Our customers range from all types of ethnicity around 18-30 years of age.

Tell us about yourself

I started in the industry when I was 16, working my way up in all sorts of positions in the food industry. Being able to see the difference between working in the kitchen to the front of the house really got me to understand how the business runs at a young age. I realized seeing customers and providing them with the best hospitality I could give was what motivated me to continue doing what I love the most.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to remain open for over five years despite a pandemic breakout.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The number of responsibilities and pressure you carry from other people.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Never give up and stay strong.
  2. Maintain a positive mindset.
  3. Always prepare for the worst.
