Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Kummer,
Principal Writer of MK Media Group, located in Alpharetta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is about health, fitness, and longevity. More specifically: blogging, content publishing, homesteading, and dietary supplements.

Tell us about yourself

Since I got my first PC for Christmas when I was 12 years old, I've had a passion for technology that I would later turn into a career. When I was a teenager, my high school coach convinced me to take track and field and, especially, the 100m sprint more seriously. So after college, I began pursuing a career as a pro track and field athlete, becoming the youngest Austrian champion since World War 2. Later I joined the Austrian Army as part of their athletic program and served for 3.5 years.

When I got out, I started my own tech business, which led me to Switzerland and later to Atlanta, where I helped a Swiss tech company expand its footprint in the US in 2007. In 2012 I started a blog to share tips and tricks in the areas I was most passionate about, including technology and photography.

A few years later, I rekindled my passion for health and fitness. I joined a CrossFit gym and started reading scientific research papers on the latest nutrition and human metabolism discoveries. So I started refocusing my blog on health and fitness by sharing what I learned. As part of that journey, I cured my irritable bowel syndrome, as well as poor metabolic health and body composition, and frequent viral infections.

As my blog and presence on social media grew, I decided to quit my day job and launch a dietary supplements business in 2021. I'm 41 now and in the best shape of my life, thanks to taking my health into my own hands instead of blindly following misguided mainstream advice. In 2020 my wife, my kids, and I also started a homestead with chickens, honey bees, and rabbits, and last year, we added a German Shepherd to our tribe.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Providing enough income for our family that enables us to have a lifestyle that includes being connected to nature, raising our own animals for food, homeschooling our kids, and more.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There is nobody else to blame than yourself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Fail fast and improve.
  2. Don't settle for less.
  3. Ignore tasks that aren't mission-critical (productivity is all about the things you DON'T do).
