Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mickey Sullivan, Owner of Miss Mickey's Dancers, located in Western Springs, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach dance to children who are 2-6 years of age.

Tell us about yourself

I started dancing when I was almost three years old and had been doing it in some form ever since. I have taught dance to all ages in my career, and about 20 years ago, I realized I have a gift for working with very young dancers. They are my passion, and they bring me such joy!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is that I started my own studio when I was 48 years old, which is REALLY old compared to when most dancers open their studios. And I realize that due to the ages I teach, my real job is helping children get over shyness and instilling self-confidence.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner for me is that you are solely responsible for every aspect of the business. However, it is the most rewarding part as well!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are passionate about the business you wish to start, as it consumes so much of your time.
  2. Make sure you find a good work and personal/family time balance. It is very important to remember because as a business owner, you are never really "off the clock," so you have to force yourself to make time every day to turn it off.
  3. Do not ever be afraid to go to anyone for help; find the correct professionals and ask the correct questions to be sure you are doing all the financial and tax aspects correctly as well as experts in your field.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

It is very scary to start your own business at first, but when you do, and it becomes successful, it is incredibly rewarding!
