Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Candice Mizell, Founder of Misplaced Muse Creative, located in Lucedale, MS, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Misplaced Muse Creative specializes in literary- and southern-inspired creations. From candles and melts to blind date books and bookish subscription boxes, Misplaced Muse Creative unleashes the inner book nerd in everyone.

Our customers are primarily those who love books, candles, and coffee those who have a soft spot for the South and all things southern, as well as those book lovers with a nerdy heart and quirky personality -- these are all our people!

Tell us about yourself

My name is Candice, and I own Misplaced Muse Creative. When I started this business alongside my fiancé (now husband), it had a completely different face. Different name, different bookish aesthetic, but still that same paper-loving heart. Misplaced Muse Creative, as it exists now, has evolved from a lifetime of loving stories and wanting to share that love of stories with others. Being able to share that love in a way that complements books is very special to me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel the most accomplished when I have a conversation with someone who loves what I do. That makes me the happiest person on the planet!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is being responsible for all the things! I am the design staff, the marketing team, the purchasing department, the box packer, the shipper (although my husband sometimes helps out with this part), and so many other things in between.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Choose one or two things to create and stick with those for a long time. It's too easy to be persuaded into making everything under the sun.
  2. Be true to yourself. This is super important because if you don't love your product with your whole heart and soul, it won't last.
  3. Network. Get out of your comfort zone and reach out to people who may provide an entry point into a new avenue for your business, such as wholesale or retail space.
