Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Eric Williams, founder of Mispillion River Brewing, located in Milford, DE, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Beer is our life, and we make beer that our friends like to drink! Come be our friends!

Tell us about yourself

I worked for a major paint corporation and home brewing on the weekends. I love brewing, and I love building teams through passion. Right after my 40th birthday, I decided to open Mispillion River Brewing. We opened our doors on November 15th, 2013. The biggest surprise has been the people! I have the best friends that have come through the brewery! It really is a community spot.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My team! It's really a family! They come to work every day and work passionately for a common goal... making Mispillion River Brewing successful.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing cash flow instead of looking at a p&l! Don't get me wrong, the financial documents are important, but cash is king, and managing it is an everyday job.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Work hard. Harder than you ever have.
  2. Lead your team, not manage.
  3. Watch out for burnout in yourself and your team. Make sure everyone takes time for themselves.
