Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jess Malz, Managing Director of Mischief Makers, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mischief Makers is the future of work agency, empowering organizations and professionals to successfully collaborate in the new world of work. We help you transform your culture and ways of working through up-skilling, facilitation, and levelling up your off-sites, programs, and events. We work with fortune 500 companies, NGOs, government agencies, and educational institutions.

Tell us about yourself

Growing up in an entrepreneurial home, I always knew I wanted to have my own business. I knew that whatever I did, I wanted it to be something rooted in purpose and helping people learn and grow. I'm in love with what I do. As the world and industry changes, I work hard to stay up-to-date and continue to develop my practice as a facilitator.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my first goal was to match the salary I was making as an employee. In year 1, I was able to double what I was making, and once I accomplished that goal, it became about so much more than financial goals. I think my biggest accomplishment is seeing how the brand and business have grown to be larger than mine. I feel like that's a success. The ways other people perceive the business and speak about it.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think that one of the hardest things is staying anchored in the long-term vision and purpose when things get challenging. At those times, working internally and having a stable income and benefits starts to look really shiny. But I'm not good at having a boss! Sometimes it can get lonely.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small!
  2. Start before you think you're ready!
  3. You just need one customer/sale to be a business!
