Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Raylene Riddell, founder of Mirthia Cakes, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mirthia Cakes is a home bakery specializing in custom cakes, as well as cupcakes and other yummy treats. My customers have an idea/photo/theme for their cake, and I work with them to create a one-of-a-kind delicious dessert made from quality ingredients.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve always had a passion for baking, and it led me to cake decorating classes in 2011. It became my hobby, and since then, I have been baking for family and friends.

In 2021, I opened Mirthia Cakes, and now I get to share my passion for creating custom cakes with so many amazing clients and see the joy on their faces when they see the finished product. I love taking a client’s vision and figuring out how to make it all come together. It drives me to discover and test out new processes, techniques, and designs.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Hearing positive feedback. I have always taken great joy from making people happy. If I can help them create a new memory with their family or friends, then I’ve done my job, and it was all worth it!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Pushing past the fear. Creating my business was kind of like stepping off a bottomless ledge, then realizing that it was only a small step. Once I got over that hurdle, I began to see the other steps I needed to take. Things began to fall into place, and now I’m living a new normal as a small business owner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a good support system. Surround yourself with encouraging friends/family and knowledgeable mentors.
  2. Take it slow. It's okay to envision all the possibilities for a company as it gives us something to aim towards, but it's a marathon, not a sprint.
  3. Have fun! Running a business takes a lot of work, but it's much less daunting if you're enjoying yourself.
