What's your business, and who are your customers?
Miribel Naturals is a brand of clean and simple curly hair products. Our customers include women and men with wavy, curly, or coily hair.
Tell us about yourself
I first started working on my business after my day job and on weekends. I always knew I wanted my own business, and I loved making things myself. I started making hair products for myself because, at the time, there weren't many clean brands catering to my hair type. Once I created a product I liked, I sent it out to others to try. From there, word of mouth took over, and things kind of snowballed. Growing up, my hair was an insecurity, so now I am motivated by the idea of helping others learn to love their natural hair.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Hmm...I think my biggest accomplishment was quitting my day job and working full-time on my business. I made that choice after my first baby was born, and I've never looked back.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is a lack of security. With my 9-5, I always knew I had a paycheck coming. I'm super thankful that my business has grown over time, but there were months when we had inventory shortages and you have to hope you saved enough during the good months to cover yourself during the slow months.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
First, figure out if you want a service-based business or if you want to sell a product. Second, figure out your strengths and lean into them. No one is good at everything, and no one can do everything. Find help in someone who excels where you're weak. Third, just get started. The time will never seem right. You will always have fears. But, you have to push all that aside and just get started with what you got. Grow your following - create a newsletter. Create a community of people who trust you and are ready for your product or service the moment it drops.
