Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Davana O'Brien, Owner of Mira's Market, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mira’s Market is a small, two-part, woman-owned business specializing in full-service event planning and decorating from concept to completion. Along with creating personalized or custom items such as drinkware, clothing, keepsakes, party favors, ornaments, and much more.

My customers are very diverse. There are those looking for unique presents to gift to those they care about, choosing a memorial piece to represent a lost one, and those who are trying to add a special touch to an event. In addition, customers include brides-to-be, expectant parents, birthday, anniversary, and special event celebrants who are looking to celebrate their special events.

Tell us about yourself

From childhood, I’ve had a love for crafting and decorating. After years of creating items and planning/decorating events for family and friends for free, I finally put my fears of failure behind me and turned my passion into a business. My biggest motivation each day is getting up and designing new and beautiful creations inspired by my daughter, who my business is named after.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment to date would be looking at the happy faces after a customer walks into a venue or event space and see their ideas come to life beautifully or when a customer receives their order and leaves positive reviews because they are in love with their products.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is finding the right work/home balance, particularly during holidays and busy times (wedding season, summer, etc.).

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a solid business plan.
  2. Choose something that you are passionate about so that it does not feel like “just a job.”
  3. Be patient. Success does not come overnight. There will be many sacrifices, long nights, and failures before you get to where you want to be.
