Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dylan Nadler, Founder of MindLock Mental Training, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

MindLock is a mental training company that works with high-performance athletes to develop the mental side of sports. With clients in over sixty cities and twelve countries across the globe, MindLock has established itself as the authority in mental training for elite athletes. Working with athletes in organizations such as the UFC, Bellator, CFL, NCAA, Olympics, and more has allowed us to refine a practical approach to mental skill development that generates consistent success at the highest levels.

Tell us about yourself

As the former captain of the Canadian National Taekwondo Team, I have experienced firsthand how impactful the mental side of the sport can be. With a lack of resources allocated to mental skill development, I set out to develop a business that would transform the traditional training landscape and place emphasis on mindset. It motivates me to know that I am supporting athletes on their journey to the top and contributing to the fulfillment of their potential.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been being able to contribute to the success stories of my clients. When my athletes win, I share the feeling of victory with them, which is a dynamic I will always love.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

A challenge that comes with being a business owner is staying organized in a field that requires a lot of multitasking. While consulting with athletes is my primary job, being a business owner requires efforts toward marketing, sales, social media, business development, and more! While I enjoy these elements of business, they require lots of discipline and patience.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Speak from experience: People don't like to be told what to do; they like hearing how you did it. Share the insights you've accumulated throughout your journey and do your best to apply them to your audience.
  2. Be persistent: Be persistent in your pursuit of success. If you believe in what you do, see it through to the end, and don't let others drag you down. Business is a marathon, not a sprint, so endurance is just as important as speed. When one door closes, another one opens; just make sure the first one is really closed first!
  3. Enjoy what you do: This sounds simple, but many miss the mark. While entrepreneurship has gained popularity in recent years, the reality is far from glamorous. Your passion for your business is what will guide you through adversity, which is why loving what you do is crucial. Enjoy the process, and the outcome will take care of itself!
