Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Triana Shaw, Founder of Plushura, located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Holistically and consciously crafted, Plushura’s natural skincare collection is made from fruit butters, marine botanical extracts, and other natural ingredients, which culminate in a range of mindful products, from body scrubs and toners to moisturizers.
Plushura takes your skin back to basics and is committed to crafting natural and vegan products that are kind to your skin and to the earth. The collection consists of clean vegan products that work in harmony to soothe stressed skin.
Tell us about yourself
With a growing passion for holistic living, Plushura began in my family’s kitchen with a desire to create effective skincare to inspire a contemplative space for mind, body, and soul rejuvenation. I first launched Plushura with a natural face cream, homemade in 2017. Since then, I am beyond grateful to continue sharing our growing collection.
Our ethos is what keeps me motivated...
Here it is: It is believed that when you move twice as fast, you notice twice as much. As a mindful skincare company, we are committed to creating products that help minimize stress, to balance and ground ourselves in the present moment and help us feel our best self.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
One of my biggest business achievements (aside from expansion and partnerships) has been hearing directly from customers about how our products have positively impacted their skin and mental health. It makes me extremely happy to know that Plushura's mission is being accomplished.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Initially, running a business is challenging because you're wearing all the hats.
When you start your own business, you're not only the content creator; you're also the writer, customer support, bookkeeper, administrator, and so much more. In the beginning, it was exhausting, but I learned to avoid burnout. It's important to figure out what needs to be done, what could be accomplished, and what could wait for another day so I can pay attention to what's important now.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be passionate about what you do. Creating a business can be a daunting endeavor, and having a passion for your work will motivate you to keep going, despite the difficulties that your business will inevitably face.
- Stay in the present moment. Getting stuck in your head leads to impatience and being discouraged. Learn to enjoy the journey rather than focusing on the results or mistakes. By simply observing your thoughts and practicing mindfulness exercises, you will be on a positive path to becoming more balanced and focused throughout the day.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are loads of resources out there for networking, knowledge sharing, and advice. Networking opens you to new business opportunities, like-minded people, and fresh ideas. Do not hesitate to ask for advice on online forums, i.e., Facebook groups and LinkedIn.
