Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Fran Rubio-Katz, Founder & Head Coach of Mindful-Ish® Parenting, located in Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Mindful-Ish® Parenting is an online parent and family coaching program. My clients want to be better parents but don't want to feel the pressure of being perfect parents (cuz there's no such thing). They're tired of feeling like they're supposed to have all the answers, AND they are looking for ways to improve their kids' lives (and their own) organically. I help my clients by showing them that there is no one size fits all anything when it comes to raising kids— rather, it is about the ability to respond. I also show them how important it is for them to work WITH their children as a team and come up with solutions to challenges together.
Tell us about yourself
I created Mindful-Ish® Parenting after struggling with my own parenting journey. I was feeling isolated and frustrated. I knew there had to be a better way to parent, and I set out to find it. After years of devoted study of conscious Parenting, mindfulness techniques, neurodevelopment, and social-emotional learning, I've created a Mindful-Ish® approach to Parenting that supports the social, emotional, and behavioral well-being of families. Each day I am motivated by giving parents the tools they need to become the best version of themselves, so they can experience more joy and ease in Parenting while raising resilient children in our ever-changing world.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being the founder of two service-based businesses that make huge differences in the lives of children and families. First, I founded the Learning Lab, an educational therapy center specializing in dyslexia and attention differences. A few months before COVID, I resigned as co-owner of Learning Lab to pursue Coach Franny and the development of Mindful-Ish® Parenting.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest yet most rewarding thing about being a business owner is that you have to be willing to change and change often. If you're not constantly learning and growing, then you're going to get left behind. It's hard work, and you seldom can take a break, but it's worth it—it keeps us out of our comfort zone and makes sure we stay on the cutting edge of whatever field we're in. You have to be willing to put yourself out there, be vulnerable and open to new ideas as well as take risks in order for your business to thrive.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- First, I encourage all entrepreneurs to get a mentor. I have had several, and their wisdom has been invaluable.
- Second, set your budget and make goals with dates attached. It's important to have concrete targets to know how far along you are in meeting your goals.
- Finally, take care of yourself—you are the most important part of your business!
