Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Paxman, owner of Milk and Honey Candle Co, located in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I make handcrafted, 100% clean burning soy-scented candles. I am a huge scented candle lover, and I needed to find some gorgeous smelling scented candles that did not bother my son's asthma. After being unimpressed by what I found, I decided to make my own! Turns out other people loved them as well, and the rest is history!

Tell us about yourself

I am a vocalist, mom of four, and scented candle enthusiast. I needed some clean burning candles that smelled amazing but didn't affect my son's asthma. I love creating scents inspired by the changing seasons and making my home cozy and inviting.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I love that feeling of creating a beautiful fragrance and watching my friends, family, and community smell my candles and love what they're smelling. I had the privilege of creating wedding favours for a close friend and loved being able to be part of their day in such an aesthetic way!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It can be very challenging to balance work and family life. I have four children between the ages of 16-7, and I also work as a music director. Finding the time to do everything I want to do is not always easy!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just do it! If you've always wanted to, just bite the bullet and jump in. The only thing stopping you is you!
  2. Social media is important. You need to constantly remind your customers that you are there for them and why they want your products.
  3. Keep it relevant. People want seasonal products. People want good gifts - keep up with current trends and remind them why you can provide that for them.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

It's amazing to be supported by a community that sees the value of shopping locally. Try to take part in giveaways and local shops. Your community wants to see and support you.
