Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Miiko Anderson, Owner of Miiko Anderson Consulting, located in Fresno, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I offer many highly specialized training, keynote speeches, and professional development workshops. I have the motivational aspect of overcoming very difficult life experiences that speak directly to the challenges faced by those struggling to succeed in the face of adversity.

I am a subject matter expert in domestic violence, human trafficking, and gender-based violent crimes. My professional experience as a senior prosecutor allows me to educate on preventing exploitation and abuse. As a certified criminal law specialist and successful trial attorney, I provide technical training to other law enforcement, first responders, healthcare, and other professionals.

Additionally, as a black female prosecuting attorney, I train on the need for diversity in leadership and provide tools for professional development that address the challenges faced by underrepresented communities in the workplace. Employee Burnout and poor student retention rates cause organizations substantial financial losses.

As a single mother on public assistance turned award-winning senior trial attorney and subject matter expert (SME) in human trafficking and gender-based violent crimes, I recognize that those from socio-economic disadvantaged backgrounds face significant barriers to success which contributes to a lack of diversity in leadership, employee burnout and poor student retention.

Individuals are living far below their potential. However, this problem affects more than individuals. As such, the market for opportunity is tremendous and critically necessary for the success of the economy and community.

Tell us about yourself

As a single mother on public assistance turned award-winning senior trial attorney and subject matter expert (SME) in human trafficking and gender-based violent crimes, I recognize that those from socio-economic disadvantaged backgrounds face significant barriers to success. Poverty, homelessness, and lack of access to educational opportunities and quality healthcare affect this population at a rate much higher than the general population.

The effect is far-reaching. Students drop out or perform poorly. Employees suffer burnout, perform poorly, or resign. It also contributes to a lack of diversity and leadership in the workplace. I am driven by the fact that there is a solution. A change in mindset and employing tools and proven strategies can turn an "underachiever" into an incredible success.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is witnessing the transformation in the mindset and practice of my clients. The switch from spectator to spectacular is incredible to watch.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time. There are not enough hours in the day!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Dream big.
  2. Work hard.
  3. Be nice.
