Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in automotive but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Axel Arellano, Co-Founder of Midwest Cartz, located in Fort Myers, Lee County, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a luxury custom golf cart dealership in southwest Florida. Our customers are typically vacationers, retirees, golfers, snowbirds, and anyone who lives in a community looking to get around in style.

Tell us about yourself

My partner, Kyle, and I have always had the entrepreneurial Spirit! We’ve been great friends for a long time and have always shared our passion for business. We have both owned other small businesses, including fitness gyms and handyman businesses. What motivates us every day is knowing that we are providing our customers in Florida with the highest quality golf carts available in the market. Before starting this business, we really did our research and even met with over five manufacturers to ensure that we were getting the best product available. Another big thing for us was to make sure that all of our carts were being made and built in the USA.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We are happy to see our carts in all the local communities and to be known for our excellent customer service. We are also very happy we were able to donate to several local charities this year. We love helping the community and being involved. We are also proud to say we exceeded our goal in our first 6 months in the business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the biggest challenges as a business owner is staying consistent and adapting to the current market. You always have to be one step ahead of the competition. This involves a lot of time going to events, expos, and meetings and continuing to make sure you have the best and latest technology/products available for your customers.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Passion: you need to love your product and believe in it. There are going to be a lot of ups and downs. I believe in order to be successful; you have to be all in and stand by your product no matter what.
  2. Education- you need to be knowledgeable about your product/service. What makes you stand out? Why your product/services? Being able to be knowledgeable and go above and beyond is what makes people want to buy or use your product/services.
  3. Work ethic - be ready to work 24/7. You need to have discipline and be ready to manage your time to the max. Starting out, you’ll have to go above and beyond in order to enter the playing field. There is a huge amount of sacrifice that goes into starting and scaling a business that I think a lot of people underestimate when first opening a business
