Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle Cubas, Founder of Positive Potentials LLC., located in Scottsdale, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Positive Potentials LLC is a consulting firm built upon the marketing, project management, and people development foundation. Our training is unique, and our programs are customized. Our customers are SMEs–small and mid-sized enterprises or expanding businesses.

Tell us about yourself

My history as a coach and teacher began when I was in elementary school. It was my desire to teach, and I became a high-school English teacher. Also, when I started a family, one of my children had learning disabilities. I learned how to communicate differently from our shared experience.

From there, I worked in corporate communications divisions for large corporations and refined my skills. I went back to university to earn my corporate communications certificate, then segued into formal training with the premier coach training school, CTI. After my intense training, I opted to become certified as a business coach and have never looked back.

Daily joy is sharing knowledge with clients that advances their lives and thinking. Their epiphanies are music to my ears! As a national public speaker, I’ve had the opportunity to address various academic and business audiences. It is rewarding to meet someone years later and have them recount what they took from their experience at one of my sessions.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The client feedback on how they’ve grown in their roles and advanced. Beyond the awards we’ve received, our integrity and client trust is priceless. Speaking before companies to share knowledge and emotional intelligence to minimize doubt and uncertainty.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Not handling risk without assessment and a plan is disastrous. The ability to prioritize within the big picture and vision. Many owners get stuck in the tasks because they feel like they’re doing something tasks are more measurable to check off a list.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research growth areas within your industry.
  2. Find ways to expose and educate yourself on unfamiliar issues. Hire talent where you have gaps.
  3. Read industry articles, listen to podcasts, and attend webinars. Learn from how others failed.
  4. Create a budget–Doing everything yourself doesn’t save money and wastes time.
