Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle Addison, an Experienced Personal Stylist located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a personal stylist with my own company Michelle Addison Style, and a personal shopper at Holt Renfrew, as well as an actress in film and tv. I work with men and women in the private sector and help them with their wardrobes and styling needs.

Tell us about yourself

I have been an actress since I was a teen and went to The University of Victoria to study theatre after high school. I fell into styling after working in a boutique while I was supporting myself as an actress. I realized that I loved the relationships that I built while working with people one on one and also loved the flexibility that running my own business provided. I started my business as a single mom and have loved working with my clients consistently year after year. What motivates me is that I really love clothes and fashion; I get excited about putting outfits together for my clients and helping them do what they do best, so they don't have to worry about what they are wearing. I make things easy for each client at the beginning of each season with strategy, shopping, and outfit design.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment is that I have kept my business going for more than ten years now and have clients that keep coming back to work with me season after season. I also love engaging with people on Instagram, and watching my social growth has been really rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think one of the hardest things is "doing all the things." Switching hats to marketing, client relations, closet work, the details of photoshoots, acting work, auditions, being a mom, and being a wife. It's a lot. It's hard to know when to switch your focus and when you do, try not to doubt that you are switching to the wrong role. I have always found that my inner hearing will lead me to deeper creativity and challenges ...so I'm never bored.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Always think about your day-to-day before starting your business- will you enjoy the little tasks that aren't as fun as the exciting ones?
  2. Set goals and a vision for your business and personal life that align with your purpose.
  3. Don't wait to be perfect at something. I have had a lot of success jumping into things I have never done before. I just believed I could.
