Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Moyer, Co-Owner of M&H Beans Coffee Co., located in North Canton, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a specialty coffee roasting business in North Canton, OH. We ethically source our green coffee from 4 different continents and serve espresso, cold brew, coffee, tea, and snacks in the store. Our customers range from casual sippers to dedicated beverage enthusiasts.

Tell us about yourself

We both have a combined 30-plus years of food service experience from many different areas. We always wanted to run our own business. Mike had been hobby roasting for a couple of years, so roasting and selling coffee out of our garage was our first step. Hannah has a love of tea and is developing a great tea program. We don't punch a clock or receive paychecks, so our motivation every day is to increase sales to pay ourselves for doing something that we truly love to do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Everyone will tell you how good your product or service is. When they buy it a second time, you know they mean it. We have developed many regular customers, and this shows we are doing something right.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

We are responsible for EVERYTHING. From marketing to washing a pile of dishes at the end of a busy day to roasting coffee to filing sales tax to setting sales goals. If something isn't done properly? It's our fault. The upside to this is- WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING. We can tailor our marketing to what makes sense for M&H Beans, we can address and fix problems as they arise, and we can do whatever needs to be done to keep us rolling along.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a way to do it right now. "A Good Plan, Violently Executed Now, Is Better Than a Perfect Plan Next Week."- George Patton
  2. Use your own money and keep debt to a minimum.
  3. Keep yourself open to learning along the way.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Operating our own business has been the most difficult and tricky thing either of us has ever done, but we wouldn't trade it for anything.
