Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Moir, Owner of Damn Fine Prints Canada, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I design and manufacture vintage-inspired prints, postcards, stickers, and shirts of Canada. My customers are people that enjoy the great outdoors, local history, and Canadian landmarks.

Tell us about yourself

I had been interested in making art in high school, but after I started a career, that kind of fell to the wayside. Later in life, I started a new job using Adobe Illustrator; it really reignited my passion for design. Coupled with my love of history and camping, I started making designs for National Parks and Canadian landmarks. The whole business started on a whim and a prompt from my wife. The positive feedback and suggestions from customers keep me inspired.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Doubling my business every year.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing my shows and keeping track of all my expenses. Tax time is a burden.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your audience.
  2. Don’t overextend yourself at the beginning.
  3. Treat your customers like family.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Starting your own business can be daunting at times but so rewarding. There will be setbacks, but you just need to dust yourself off and learn from your mistakes.
