Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Jamin, a tv writer, and showrunner based in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I've been a professional television writer since 1996. My credits include King of the Hill, Beavis & Butthead, Just Shoot Me, Rules of Engagement, Wilfred, Maron, Brickleberry, Out of Practice, Tacoma FD, and many others.

Tell us about yourself

I've wanted to be a sitcom writer since I was a teenager. After college, I moved to Los Angeles to chase a dream, and I've been fortunate enough to make a living at it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Several years ago, I decided I wanted to write a collection of personal essays and perform them. Even though I'm well known in television writing circles, for the most part, the general public didn't know who I was. To fix this, I started posting daily content on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook under the handle @MichaelJaminWriter. I post about my experiences as a screenwriter, how to break into Hollywood, how to be a better writer, etc. A year and a half later, I have close to a half-million followers, which has been enough to sell out shows and tours. My forthcoming collection and the one-man show is called "A Paper Orchestra." People can learn more about it at michaeljamin.com/upcoming.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Professional screenwriters have no job security. We're always hustling for the next gig.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be authentic.
  2. Share your story.
  3. Don't ask for permission.
