Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in cannabis but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michaela Freedman, International Cannabis Business & Regulatory Consultant of MF Cannabis Consulting, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

MF Consulting is a global cannabis business advisory that works with start-ups and seasoned players to navigate and capitalize on new market opportunities. My company facilitates joint venture partnerships for licensed producers to access new revenue channels. Start-ups and brands receive end-to-end product development and supply chain management services. With extensive knowledge of global regulations and market conditions, MF Consulting serves as an expert witness on legal cannabis cases.

Tell us about yourself

While looking for full-time work in the cannabis industry, I learned through all my conversations that there was a need for independent consultants to facilitate wholesale deals. I'm motivated by the fact that medical cannabis is an effective treatment with so much potential. Advancing its regulation and adoption is revolutionizing healthcare.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is my ability to pivot. I started my business in a burgeoning but volatile industry. As regulations evolve and new markets legalize cannabis, I have been able to successfully shift my focus to offer advisory services to help new entrants launch their businesses.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part about being a business owner is not always knowing when or what your next pay cheque will be and being prepared for these slower periods.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Network and talk to as many people in the industry as you can!
  2. Attend industry conferences to meet people face to face. These interactions are more memorable than zoom calls.
  3. Starting a new business is risky: start slow and scale with demand.
