Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business consulting and services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with David Deane-Spread, Founder of Metattude, located in Nedlands, WA, Australia.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business, Metattude, provides coaching and mentoring to Board Directors, CEO & their direct reports across both government and commerce.

Tell us about yourself

I began this business as a result of presenting "The Human Face of Entrepreneurship" to MBA students when I witnessed the big gap in effective leadership development in both government and commerce. I'm motivated every day by seeing the growth and improvement my clients make in running their organisations. We aim for 20%improvement across the organisation within 90 days. My clients astound me with their achievements which are often even better than what we aimed for!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was working with a small start-up client and helping him scale the business over nearly 20 years to be the leading national provider in his space and then sell the business for a massive 8-figure return. I'm also grateful my business has survived and thrives fully booked, based on 100% word of mouth and referrals.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It will always be the duality of hiring the right people and letting good people go, regardless of the reasons.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure your business idea has depth and clarity and that there is an evidence-based need for the product or service.
  2. Make sure you hire the right person for the right role for the right reasons.
  3. Develop your ability to conduct courageous, crucial, yet constructive conversations.
