Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in videography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Justin Croninger, Founder & CEO of Message in a Bottle Productions, located in Memphis, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a creative video production company located in Memphis, TN. We create engaging videos, capture special moments, and provide video services for live events. Our customers are those wanting a turnkey service of having their video needs filled by a team of professionals who care about the end product. We pride ourselves on making the process of creating videos enjoyable and painless. We like to take the vision for your video project and exceed your expectations.

Tell us about yourself

My degree is in Theatre Performance because I love telling stories. One day a long time ago, a friend introduced me to creative cinematography, and I was instantly hooked on this new method of storytelling. I started offering my video services to others, and in the right place at the right time moment, the world exploded with the need for video. Now we handle the video needs of clients across the country in keeping fresh, engaging content flowing. We love what we do, and we make it show in each and every video.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I take great pride in that I'm able to support my family (and the families of our employees) through the art of storytelling. Each and every day, we create new and unique videos, and to be able to make a living for over a decade doing so is mind-blowing.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a small business owner is that the responsibility for a project to happen and finish correctly lies with me. You have to constantly keep a good balance of the quality and quantity metrics to make sure that each project gets the love and care it deserves. If that means long nights editing or going the extra mile, so be it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My top three tips would be to:

  1. Always underpromise and overdeliver.
  2. Value your work and your time (because if you don't, no one else will), and
  3. Believe in yourself and leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of your passion.
