Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Sarah Parsons, Owner of Mental Health 2 You, located in Louisville, KY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a private practice Psychiatrist in Louisville, KY. My patients are individuals living in Kentucky, Indiana, or Alabama in need of psychiatric care.

Tell us about yourself

I entered medical school thinking I would specialize in Family Medicine, but once I got into my clinical rotations, I realized that Psychiatry was a better fit. The opportunity to spend more time with patients and to help them in their most vulnerable state was rewarding. I also noticed that I enjoyed this patient population and felt passionate about providing psychiatric care in all settings.

I completed Psychiatric Residency and Psychosomatic Fellowship, transitioning into practice in 2009. I worked in Behavioral Oncology for nine years before shifting to private practice. I was a single mother then, and the need to control my hours and be flexible for the care of my children helped me to take the leap from employment to business ownership. I am motivated every day by seeing my patients get better - that's what it's all about.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as the owner of my private practice has been growing the practice and learning the nuances of business ownership while not sacrificing my excellent care for patients.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner for me is adding one more hat to my wardrobe - mother, wife, psychiatrist, and now business owner and boss.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The timing, finances, circumstances, etc., are never going to be perfect for starting your own business. Believe in yourself and do it scared.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We are in the midst of a mental health crisis in the United States. Check on your loved ones and take care of yourself. Seek help from a psychiatrist if needed - we are here to help!
