Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Green, founder of Melt Chocolate Company, located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the founder and sole proprietor of Melt Chocolate Company, specializing in small-batch artisanal chocolate. My forte is creating unique flavour combinations and pairing them with beautiful design elements. My clientele appreciates the carefully crafted bonbons and chocolate bars and the fact that my products are made with fresh ingredients in small batches. One of my favorite parts of the business is meeting my clientele and building long-term relationships.

Tell us about yourself

I transitioned into chocolate after a career-ending injury I endured while I was a Principal Dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. During my recovery, I needed something to distract myself and found an online chocolatier course. The rest is history. Chocolate is now my artistic outlet and obsession. My inspiration for flavours and designs come from all over the place, including chefs, artwork, and my day-to-day environment. I love this part of my job. Some of my best ideas come at 4 in the morning! My clientele appreciates the carefully crafted bonbons and chocolate bars and the fact that my products are made with fresh ingredients in small batches. One of my favorite parts of the business is meeting my clientele and building long-term relationships.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The moment I knew I had “made it” in the industry was when I had the opportunity to create my own signature chocolate blend, Enso with Cacao Barry. This service is reserved for elite chocolatiers and pastry chefs around the world. Working with food scientists in France, I was able to develop my own unique flavor profile using cocoa beans from around the world.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a sole proprietor, I wear all the hats of the business. I have no formal training in running a business or operating a commercial kitchen, so everything has been a learning process. I am not too tech-savvy, so I would have to say that the technology element has been a large stumbling block for me as well as all the paperwork associated with a small business! Thankfully I have an amazing husband! Overall, it is my labour of love, and somehow it doesn’t seem like work!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t get discouraged. It’s a journey of growth and discovery! As a business owner, there will always be highs and lows.
  2. Make sure you think from A-Z!
  3. Start small, don’t bite off more than you can chew! This one may be controversial for running a business nowadays, but I take pride in not mass-producing my product.
