One Bite is Never Enough - Mel's Toffee

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle Williamson, Owner of Mel's Toffee, located in Rochester Hills, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner of Mel's Toffee. My customers are anyone who loves food and flavors!! Toffee is good anytime and anywhere.

Tell us about yourself

I owned a five-layer pretzel company. It grew in many odd ways, and I needed to choose one product and do that well. I was shopping, and there was someone giving out samples of toffee. I liked it....but it was just ok. Then, there was a prominent toffee company, and their toffee was not good. I decided to come out with my own toffee. Make it, research flavors, and make it bold and exciting. My greatest motivation is my customers. I love to hear who they gifted the toffee to and how much they love it. It helps me to know there are people out looking for my products.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was to stay these past few years afloat. Just keep swimming. In 2020, my products went from having been in 4 states to 45 states.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest is trying to stay afloat in these challenging times. We constantly have to keep an eye on what ingredients are in, what is out....when will it be in. Another thing that is hard is trying to survive during these challenging financial times. Trying to do better than last year..always trying. Sometimes you feel like you're running in mud.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Plan.
  2. Make sure you have enough money to start.
  3. Know where you want to go and possibly end.
