Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melissa J. McLean, MA, LPC ACS, Licensed Therapist, Entrepreneur, Speaker, and Author based in Turnersville, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a coaching business and help other business owners bridge the gap between where they are in business now and where they want to be. I have a special focus on therapists building their private practice.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Melissa Joy McLean, and I am a proud mama of two young children who, for sure, keep me on my toes and contribute to my striving to be a better person daily. In addition to being a mom, I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Professional Coach that owns and runs a multi-clinician private practice as well as a coaching business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, my biggest accomplishment thus far is the amount of lives that I have touched by saying "yes" to expanding my territory by bringing on additional staff members and coaching others to build their own businesses.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things, especially depending on your personality, can be having a healthy work-life balance. Most of us join the world of entrepreneurship with the thought of gaining more flexibility, but in the beginning, that may not happen right away. It may take some time to set a solid foundation and get stabilized so that you can have that healthy work-life balance.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do some mindset work to build up your confidence as the CEO of your business and help reframe limiting beliefs that may be holding you back from your success.
  2. Set a firm foundation by developing the vision and structure of your business so that you have a roadmap of where to go.
  3. Connect with a mentor or coach who has "been there, done that" so that you have support in taking the next right steps toward your business goals.
