Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Meghan Kennihan, a Certified Personal Trainer and Running Coach, based in La Grange, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I develop individualized custom training plans for every client based uniquely on your health, lifestyle, and personal preferences. My goal is to help clients get in shape, improve metabolism, and have more energy leading to a longer, healthier, and more productive life. I work with my clients to identify their goals, whether they be simply for weight loss or completing a marathon. Then I use all my energy and knowledge to help them achieve those goals. I aim to communicate openly with clients, discuss any questions or concerns, and celebrate successes. I want all my clients to enjoy running and exercise as much as I do, and I feel the best reward is watching my clients improve their health, reach that race day distance or personal record, and achieve their goals. I understand that it is hard to stay in shape, look great, and perform at your peak on your own. If it were easy, we would all look like supermodels or be top athletes. Whether you need to lose a few extra pounds, tone and strengthen your body, or prepare yourself for competition. I can motivate you, challenge you, and train you to reach your goals!

Tell us about yourself

I live in LaGrange, IL. I have always enjoyed sports and fitness. I played every sport available in elementary school and junior high. In high school, I played tennis, cheerleading, and track & field, earning MVP honors twice in both tennis and cheerleading. I graduated from DePaul University in 2004 and began pursuing my career in fitness, running, and personal training. I went back to school, completing an intensive Personal Training program at DePaul University to increase my knowledge and education.

I am a USA Track & Field, and RRCA (Road Runners of America) certified distance coach. I am a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and a level 3 USA Cycling Coach. I have over 20 years of experience teaching spin classes, weight-lifting, and group exercises. I am also an experienced runner, ultrarunner, and triathlete competing, winning, and placing in 5Ks, 10Ks, half-marathons, marathons, ultra distances, and triathlons. I hold multiple state Powerlifting records. I am passionate about helping others enjoy running, fitness, and health as much as I do. I strive to bring out the best in everyone I work with.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have helped 100s of clients to lose weight, reach their race goals, and get healthy. It's so rewarding to see the change in people when they work with me and reach their fitness and health goals.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part of my job is that it's not a steady income. Clients come and go, especially around the seasons. They want to get in shape for the holidays, summer vacation, or a wedding, and then they are gone.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Word of mouth is the best form of marketing.
  2. Client retention is so important, so make sure you are giving your clients what they are paying for and more.
  3. Find your niche. Don't try to be everything to everyone. Find the clients that you work best with and market to them.
