Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan McElheran, CEO of Wayfound Mental Health Group, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Wayfound Mental Health Group is a provider of mental health and wellness services headquartered in Calgary, AB, with offices in Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, and Toronto, ON. We offer proactive mental health training for individuals who work in high-stress occupations via an empirically-informed program called Before Occupational Stress (BOS). We work with clients across the developmental spectrum who have experienced exposure to traumatic events and particularly focus on supporting those who work in public safety and public service positions.
Tell us about yourself
I love challenges and working with people. Building relationships is one of my most favourite things to do, and this gets me out of bed in the morning. I am motivated to influence the mental health industry and to work to establish a mental health system that prioritizes wellness, proactivity, and barrier-free access for those who need mental wellness support.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I am most proud of the team we have built at Wayfound. We are accomplishing things every day with individuals, families, systems, governments, and so on, but it all starts with the incredibly dedicated, talented, and passionate group of people who come to work each day.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Competing demands that influence competition between values. The practical realities of business ownership do not always align with how I want to run my business, and I find this tension often hard to navigate.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find one thing you do about which you're passionate, and you do well, and focus on that thing.
- Be mindful of who you surround yourself with and the environment you create... context is powerful!
- You can get through anything with the right team around you.
