What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a 6-figure esthetician turned beauty business mentor. I created The Glow Lounge Indy, my esthetics practice, where I focus on results-oriented, customized skin treatments. My facial clients are extremely committed to the health of their skin, aging gracefully, and recognizing the importance of self-care.
The Badass Beauty Boss is my mentoring business, where I work with female entrepreneurs in the beauty industry. Clients are often new to the industry, have just opened their first beauty-based business, or need guidance to help them bring in more clients, increase their income, scale their businesses and work fewer hours. Estheticians, hair stylists, nail techs, lash artists, massage therapists, permanent makeup artists, and makeup artists are my main clientele!
Tell us about yourself
When I was a senior in high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do. All I knew was that I didn't want to work for anyone else. My mom encouraged me to look into doing makeup professionally as I loved doing my friend's makeup; it was something I truly loved and was good at. But growing up in a small farm town in Indiana, there's very little in the way of professional makeup education available. I ended up going to business school to have some sort of business background and went on to beauty school after. They don't tell you that you learn nothing about makeup in beauty school, but I fell in love with learning about the skin while I was there. After graduating, I worked at a few spas but quickly realized that wasn't for me. I went into freelance makeup artistry for the next 8 years and did over 100 weddings, special events, commercial projects, and professional headshots.
In 2019 I opened my very first skincare treatment room. In 2021 I transitioned into my current space, completely renovated it, and turned it into the spa of my dreams. In June of 2022, I launched my mentoring business as a means to give other women what I never had, training, mentoring, and guidance in opening and running a successful beauty business.
My motivation always comes from wanting a different life for my fiancé and myself. I was an awful corporate employee because I couldn't stand the confines, expectations, and the type of life most live when working in corporate. My main goal has always been freedom. I wake up every day because I GET to do this. I get to create my own schedule. I do what I want to do on my terms, no one else's.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Definitely creating The Glow Lounge, minimizing my schedule to three days a week, and making 6-figures.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The ups and downs! The rollercoaster is never-ending. Some days you make so much money, other days you make nothing. New projects can take months to actually bring in income. You have to be able to weather the inconsistencies. Entrepreneurship isn't for those that want stability!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start NOW. There will never ever be a time when you're "ready." The longer you put it off, the longer you delay your success.
- Hire a mentor. Find someone that's done what you're trying to do and invest in their mentorship. It will save you so much time, money, and headaches and ultimately expedite your business.
- Don't ever quit. There will be many, many times when you want to. Your "why" better be stronger than any excuse to quit.
