Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Collins, a business coach, and jeweller based in Brussels, Belgium.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am passionate about creating a supportive community for aspiring jewellery designers looking to turn their side hustles into full-time successes. There are so many jewellers out there who create stunning handmade jewellery but lack the confidence or know-how to turn a profit from selling their jewellery. That used to be me too. But after 7 years of struggling alone and teaching myself everything I needed to know to succeed in my business, I decided to share my Consistent Sales Framework so that others can also live off something they are passionate about. In my Consistent Sales Academy, you will be guided step-by-step from A-Z of running a jewellery business.

Tell us about yourself

After I studied Jewellery Manufacturing and Design, I was filled to the brim with creativity and excitement for running a jewellery business. However, I had no clue how to turn my making skills into a profitable business, so I began the long journey of figuring everything out myself. I took numerous courses on marketing, sales psychology, social media, and Facebook ads to help. I know just how much of a struggle it can be trying to figure this all out alone, so that's exactly why I created my CSA course - to help others speed up this process and have a one-stop shop for everything you need to know. Seeing everyone's smiling faces in the bi-monthly group calls and being there to support them makes it so worth it!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, having a positive growth mindset has been one of the biggest advantages. It helps me to stay motivated and focused on my goals, even when faced with challenges or setbacks. It also encourages me to be open to learning new skills and knowledge, which will help me continuously improve my business. Running a business always comes with obstacles and challenges, and that's why having a strong will and a clear "why" helps me stay focused and positive. With this, I was able to turn my passion for jewellery into two profitable businesses. One selling my own jewellery, and the other helping others do the same.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a self-employed jewelry business owner in Belgium, one of the biggest challenges I face is balancing the demands of running a business with the demands of my personal life. It can be difficult to find time to take care of everything that needs to be done, and there is always the pressure to make sure that the business is successful. Additionally, there is the challenge of managing finances and ensuring that the business is profitable, which can be especially difficult in a competitive industry like jewellery. Finally, there is the challenge of marketing and promoting the business to attract new customers and keep the business growing. Overall, being a self-employed business owner requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and time management skills to overcome these challenges and achieve success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus on creating high-quality, unique products: As a handmade jewellery business, it is important to differentiate yourself from other businesses by offering products that are of the highest quality and that are truly unique. This can help you stand out in a crowded market and attract loyal customers.
  2. Build a strong online presence: In today's digital age, it is essential to have a strong online presence to reach a wider audience and connect with potential customers. This includes having a professional website, an active social media presence, and a presence on online marketplaces like Etsy or eBay.
  3. Network and build relationships: Building relationships with other industry professionals and potential customers is key to the success of any business. Consider attending markets, joining group courses, and collaborating with other complimentary businesses or influencers to expand your network and increase your visibility. Never feel like you are failing by seeking help. There is no way we can all be experts at everything we do the first time we try. Be kind to yourself.
