Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Prejzner, an entrepreneur, and brand strategist based in Lakewood, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the founder and CEO of the award-winning brand agency, Hackett Brand Consulting, and the founder and CEO of Local - a small business marketing agency. I have helped build brands and marketing strategies for everyone from Fortune 50 companies to globally recognized entrepreneurs to international brands and independent thought leaders alike.

I am an entrepreneur, brand strategist, and human who helps individuals and businesses find their purpose, create their own path, and show up as they are truly meant to be. I help people understand the importance of embracing their unique selves and living a life truly meant for them by empowering individuals to take control of their own life journey and providing practical strategies for shifting limiting beliefs as they create their own path.

Tell us about yourself

Prior to starting my own business, I worked both at an agency and for a corporate office and led marketing as a Brand Director. But while I was climbing the corporate ladder, I always knew that I wanted to start my own business, but I had no real idea of what I was going to do or the path I was going to take to get there. After an office relocation, and a new job leading and growing an entire marketing team, I went on a dream trip to New Zealand, and my husband and I went bungee jumping. It was one of those profound, albeit cliche, moments where literally let go during that jump had me reeling for change, and I knew in my heart that when I went back to Colorado, I was going to make a big change.

I came back and started Hackett Brand Consulting - a branding and marketing agency for purpose-driven brands. Since, I started a second organization, Local, doing small business marketing and my own work through MegPrez.com, where I help individuals and businesses find their purpose, create their own path, and show up as they truly meant to be. My businesses are all founded on the idea of a larger purpose that I can draw from my own experiences and help people grow for good.

Through our marketing agencies, I help grow brands with purpose and help small businesses grow by using the knowledge and resources gained from working with some of the world's leading brands and applying them to small business growth. Now, through Meg Prez, I lead from own life journey of creating my own path to help others uncover their true purpose and passion. It's in helping others and doing something bigger in the world that I wake up and love what I do every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have really enjoyed helping our clients grow, but honestly, my biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been scaling a marketing agency while also being pregnant during the pandemic.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I always view hard things in business, challenges, and risk as a matter of perspective. Losing a loved one is hard. Facing an adverse or traumatic childhood is hard. So when it comes to being a business owner, I try to keep things in perspective, and nothing ever feels hard or risky. The "hard" things always just feel like a problem to solve. For me, the alternative reality of not following my heart, staying on a corporate career path, and not getting out to pursue my own path and purpose is way harder than anything I've considered in business.

When it comes to hard things in my own business and forging my own path, I'd rather risk building out a new business, failing, and doing it again any day over than staying on a path that isn't meant for me. Life's a matter of perspective.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid to create your own path.
  2. Make decisions quickly, and trust your instinct.
  3. Keep going. Often the best things come after the toughest moments.
