Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shai Bekman, president of Meels, Inc., located in Markham, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Meels curates and delivers fresh (never frozen) meals. Our team of chefs and nutritionists combine wholesome, non-GMO, and organic ingredients to craft food that takes care of you, so you can be at your best.

Our meals are fully cooked, so all you need to do is heat and eat! Forget shopping, chopping, prepping, and cleaning.

We worked hard to source the following:
Organic ingredients
Antibiotic-free seafood
Organic chicken
Grass-fed beef
Vegan options

On top of those requirements, we wanted it to be delicious and affordable!
Sadly, we couldn't find a service that hit every mark, and so we started Meels ✌

Tell us about yourself

With a background in software development, we wanted to create an extremely healthy food platform that was easy to use and driven by the best ingredients and technology. Our commercial kitchens are entirely paperless, digital, and software-driven. Our motivation is to make healthy food that tastes amazing available at scale.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Scaling any business is challenging - growing pains are real. We are incredibly proud of our entire team for always being several steps ahead so that we can scale effortlessly and without sacrificing our core mission and quality.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There are different types of entrepreneurs. Some find the pressure challenging, while others use the pressure to strive. The most challenging part is managing the highs and the lows and focusing on your core mission during these times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Define a mission for what your business strives to solve. We wanted to tighten an industry we were passionate about but felt was fragmented. We achieved our goals by sticking to our mission of providing affordable food that tastes great and uses the best ingredients.
  2. Look at the big picture. If you want to scale, you must be ready. Part of that preparation is ensuring your team is well-positioned to grow. That can mean ensuring you have enough personnel, tools, or machinery to achieve the next step in your business much sooner than is needed. The most significant danger in scaling any business is being unprepared for growth and scrambling.
  3. Start small, and grow. Not every business needs a massive, multi-million dollar investment. Starting small allows you to prove your concept and solve your challenges at a smaller scale, transitioning to better processes as you grow.
