Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kyle Alexander Meeks, Founder of Meeks Media, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Director & Photographer. As a portrait & Fashion Photographer, I love working with artists & creative professionals who are looking for photos that share their authentic selves, all while looking their best.

Tell us about yourself

Every photo/video tells a story. One day I realized that my nieces and nephews were absorbing these stories and learning about themselves through the media before they even had the time to mature and make decisions about themselves. And I realized that it wasn't only the young people but adults like myself, and in fact, everyone absorbs these stories to different degrees. So I dedicated my company to creating visuals and telling stories that encourage, equip, educate and entertain audiences. I think most media wants to encourage us to be consumers. I create media that encourages us to be our authentic selves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far as a business owner has been picking up my photography studio in Columbus, Ohio, and moving it to Los Angeles, California. I have been able to meet and build another client set that I love collaborating with, all while maintaining my clients in the Midwest. An added bonus of expanding my network is being able to refer more business to my peers in both cities as well!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Work-life balance is tough. While my career is high on my priority list, it can never surpass my loved ones. I really value time with my family and my tribe. It has been a challenge to make time exclusively for vacation, but I enjoy finding opportunities to work with my creative friends or book jobs in cities where I have a family. In life, I generally prefer a "both/and" approach.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know thyself. Be honest about your strengths, weaknesses, and what motivates you.
  2. Cook with what you've got. We always have exactly what we need to start, so start!
  3. Play nice! You can accomplish much bigger things with others than you can go solo.
