Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness and development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Will Clower, CEO of Mediterranean Wellness, LLC., located in Miami, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mediterranean Wellness is a company I founded 20 years ago this March to improve the health of people. We work with corporations, health plans, hospital groups, and brokers to apply the principles of healthy cultures to the corporate culture of health.

Tell us about yourself

After getting my Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Emory in Atlanta, I was doing research at the Institute of cognitive sciences in Lyon, France, where I observed the habits of healthy eating that leave an entire culture happier and healthier. After returning home, I felt like I was doing more good on this planet by translating this healthy approach in a way that everyone can take advantage of. What motivates me is that we are making a huge difference in the lives of real people who struggle to find a healthy lifestyle every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Two things: First, creating a culture that is a true work family. Everyone takes care of each other works with, and for, and alongside each other in a truly cooperative environment. Second, we have done this without having to go out and raise outside funds to stay alive. This means we can stay true to our own mission, driven by our principles rather than an external funding source.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Bearing the weight of the responsibility for the people in our work family. While it's a blessing to know their lives and spouses and kids, understanding that their fate is in the hands of the company can literally wake me up at night.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus on your people. When you hire, definitely have their skillset in mind, but (with some exceptions) who that person is, is far more important.
  2. Focus on your core. You may see the broad vision of your company, but you're not going to be able to get to everything all at once. Be patient. You'll get there if you build outward from your core product/service first.
  3. Focus on the Good. It's not trivial to go in this direction, and it can definitely wear you down after a while. If you are grounded in the positive impact you are having on the lives of real people, it can sustain you across the rocky patches.
