Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Miles Nichols, Co-Founder of Medicine With Heart, located in Morrison, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Functional Medicine clinic specializing in treating complex chronic illnesses like Lyme Disease, mold illness, gut problems, thyroid issues, and autoimmune. Many times chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, food sensitivities, and chronic pain can be linked with these root causes.

Patients in the clinic have often been told before working with us that their bloodwork looks okay and nothing is wrong, so maybe they should see a psychiatrist. However, they knew something was off and decided to get committed to investigating root causes. That is what our clinic excels at is identifying mystery root causes and finding solutions that are natural and not limited to medication to manage symptoms.

Tell us about yourself

Growing up, my father was a doctor and politician. He taught public health at a medical school and worked his way up to state senator. When I was 15, he passed away suddenly and unexpectedly from a heart attack. From that point forward, I have dedicated my life to help prevent and reverse chronic disease and help people who are well to optimize and increase their chances of living long and healthy lives.

I also struggled with chronic fatigue in my early 20s and had to figure out the causes, which standard medicine practices failed to do. It took years of research and dozens of practitioners to help me, and I want to pay that forward and help others avoid the obstacles I faced in my own health journey.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that at least 6 in 10 Americans have one or more chronic diseases, and 4 in 10 have two or more. This is unacceptable to me and has been on the rise. I am passionately dedicated to reversing the chronic disease epidemic in this country.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have a clinic and a practitioner training institute. I am humbled by very competent functional medicine doctors seeking me out for treatment and training.

I also started my business without investors or much capital, and it has been profitable from day one. People see the value.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Getting distracted by shiny objects. There are so many interesting projects and opportunities. I like to say yes to things that interest me, and that hurt my focus. It has been hard to learn to stay focused on fewer things when I want to combine so many things together.

However, the systems and operations of the business need solid ground, and that has been a huge learning curve for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Persistence is key, and there are times I would have liked to walk away or thought things were going to crumble. I stuck with it and do not believe I would not be as successful today without doing that.
  2. Get business coaching and connect with other successful colleagues to share ideas and brainstorm strategies for growing the business.
  3. Invest in long-term marketing strategies like free content, blogs, summits, books, etc. They are hard to do and take a long time to show a return on investment but can be some of the most lucrative in the long run, and they help people with free information in the meanwhile. It is a win-win to get your message out, increase awareness around your brand, and generate interest in your business.
