Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bill McGinnis, Chairman of McYoung Foods, LLC, located in Indianapolis, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We manufacture/market gluten-free, allergen-free, nut-free, Kosher granola called Awesome Granola. Our customers are any individuals seeking a healthy snack option. Also, those with food allergy issues, such as gluten/nut allergies, Celiac, Crohn's, Inflammatory Bowel, etc.

Tell us about yourself

We have family members with food allergies. Being a pharmacist/MBA and working in healthcare for over 50 years, I have noticed a decline in the health of Americans. Diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, lack of exercise, and healthy eating have led to a dramatic increase in healthcare-related costs. That must change. This is why we come to work each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We are beginning to notice an uptick in consumers becoming more involved with their personal health and lifestyle. It is rewarding for me to watch this change. Being a small part of the education of individuals has been most rewarding to me.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Getting the attention of the large box stores, grocers, and chain pharmacies. There are so many snacks that contain vast amounts of sugar, and retailers make a lot of money selling these items. It is hard to get their attention to focus on health over profits.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Know your market. Are you willing to take a financial/personal risk? Invest in something you know. Don't look for the home run. Listen to your customers. Be willing to accept criticism. Hire competent people. Surround yourself with good advisors. Have a solid business plan with enough capital to last 3-5 years. You will not be an overnight sensation.
