Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lisa Tennenbaum, CEO of MCORE Foundation, located in Powell, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our mission is to provide education, screenings, and enable research for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) for children and young adults.

Tell us about yourself

For over twenty-five years, I worked in operations and marketing and was originally the Director of Marketing when I first started with MCORE. I am motivated by the privilege of getting up each day to take the foundation forward into the future to educate and prevent sudden cardiac deaths in youth. When a family participates in one of our programs and calls because we have found an unknown abnormality that could be life-threatening, thank us for saving their child's life. That is not a job, it is an honor to move our mission forward each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment thus far is the expansion of our services into 8 states. Providing programs with schools, hospitals, and other foundations.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is operating as a non for profit or 501c3 organization, and we charge a nominal fee for services along with grants and donations. It is to continue proving that we are highly qualified at what we do, which is a constant education with the public and the medical community.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Must have a strong plan and budget.
  2. Know your business inside and out and how each position in your organization should work.
  3. It has to be your passion!
