Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sharon (Sherry) Smies-Evins, founder, and president of MC3 Botanicals, Inc., located in Crystal Falls, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a women-owned cannabis cultivation in the upper peninsula of Michigan. We are growing in an innovative year-round greenhouse, giving our plants and people an amazing environment. Our staff is passionate about the plant, the community, and creating a product to be proud of. Our craft cannabis is hand-trimmed, and our very experienced lead grower has created custom strains that have been getting great reviews.

The percentage of women in executive positions in the cannabis industry steadily dropped to only 8% in 2021. We want to encourage and also share any wisdom we have to help and support other women in this industry.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up on a farm in Wisconsin, where I taught by example of a good work ethic. My creativity took me off the farm and into the city as a graphic designer. I worked up to President of a design studio, working with national brands such as Johnsonville and Kohler. My need for sunshine led me to Austin, Texas, where I built my own company, creating brands and marketing materials for various companies. After working with a CBD company, my passion for using the product and learning about natural plants led me to cannabis. This passion grew more as a family member experienced a rare cancer where the chemo treatment caused severe nausea. After losing over 30 pounds, the only thing that helped was cannabis. This product gave her instant relief and allowed her to consume food again. This is why I work in an industry that is still suffering the stigma and will continue to use my skills to educate on the healing benefits of this natural, beautiful plant.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Looking back on my history, I'd have to say perseverance. So many things in life are difficult, and with my faith, I have been able to persevere and grow with through the difficulties.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's hard being a president/CEO and very lonely, struggling with company issues. When there are victories, you always praise your team. When there are failures, it seems to always rest on your shoulders.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You need to have the passion to persevere.
  2. You also need a very good support team (my husband and family) to encourage you through the difficult times and listen when you need to vent.
  3. Learn everything you can about the industry, competitors, and how you can be better and/or different.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I'm just one of the women working hard at building something special. There are so many of us quietly working every day, supporting our families, and trying to make a positive difference in this world.
