Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Parisa Fowles-Pazdro, CEO of maxbone, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As the first branded pet label, I started maxbone to provide a modern, smart experience in pet health and wellness. As my dog Macintosh was being treated for skin inflammation, I was constantly frustrated by the outdated approach used in the pet industry, and I wanted to improve things. maxbone was born to offer pet owners a brand experience they can relate to and provide their pets with the best products they deserve. Among our carefully selected products are freeze-dried food - which we spent two years developing the most nutritious and convenient formulas - grooming products, functional accessories, beds, bowls, and toys. We're a very design-driven brand, but at the core, we design products that are functional and that make a positive impact on pets and their people.

Tell us about yourself

Being a dog owner myself, I did not feel represented in the pet industry when it came to brand experience and product offering. So I decided to create what was lacking in the market - a shop where pet owners can find all the best products they need for their pets in one convenient destination. maxbone was founded on the principle that our pets should receive the same care as we do for ourselves - a concept that was completely new to the pet industry at the time I founded the company. There is no reason why pet products should be any different than what we eat, wear, or use personally. My daily motivation is to make sure we're providing the best products and experiences to our customers and to improve their lives continuously.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have achieved many things throughout the years, such as building a highly talented team, a reliable brand that dog owners can trust, and improving the lives of so many dogs. However, I'm especially proud of launching our line of freeze-dried food. We built maxbone on the philosophy that pets are family and deserve the best, so it didn't make sense to have the best accessories, high-quality apparel, and effective grooming if we kept feeding our dogs food that we couldn't trust. So we took it upon ourselves, developing the cleanest pet food ever. All of our freeze-dried food is grain-free, low carb, and 100% real. Our team is proud to have fed thousands of dogs and improved their health in the way they deserve.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Running a business presents unique challenges every day. That's why having a business vision that is both strong and flexible becomes increasingly important as the business progresses and evolves. As we move forward, our needs are changing very rapidly, and we need to be committed to a vision. My experience has taught me to set a clear goal and communicate efficiently with the team, which makes the process easier, and everyone feels part of the big picture.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pick markets that are scalable enough for the long haul.
  2. Don't overthink too much.
  3. Hire people that are smarter than yourself that believe in your vision.
