Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with , Nicole Spiegel-Gotsch, Founder of Mavyn, located in North Bergen, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mavyn is a consultancy dedicated to helping women build, launch and grow their businesses by mastering their marketing. Our clients are typically mission-driven early and growth-stage startups. We work hand in hand with them to get clarity around their business goals, how to reach them, and take the steps to get there.

Tell us about yourself

In 2009, my Capstone study at NYU was on Barriers to Women’s Entrepreneurship. It identified 14 distinct barriers for women. All of which still persist today. Mavyn was created to empower and help female founders navigate the unique challenges and barriers they face in a tangible way beyond “leaning in.”

What motivates me is seeing my clients succeed and helping them avoid the mistakes I made along the way.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I’m not sure if it’s my biggest, but one of the accomplishments I’m most excited about right now is helping a startup client go from being stuck to being more market and funding ready while attracting high-level partnerships.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Like lots of entrepreneurs, the hardest part for me is balancing working in the business with working on it, but it’s further complicated by the fact that I have two autoimmune conditions and suffer from chronic pain.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your homework. Have a clear understanding of the basics. What space in the market are you trying to fill, how is your product or service different, who is your audience, and how are you going to reach them?
  2. Develop a strong network. Aside from supporting and learning from each other, you never know who might become a client, mentor, co-founder, or advisory board member.
  3. You don’t have to know (or do) it all. Everyone has different strengths. Build a team with complementary skills that you can rely on.
