Mattie B's Gifts & Apparel is primarily shopped by women ages 25-70.
Tell us about yourself
We moved to this rural area 26 years ago, and I always wished there was a place to grab a quick gift. Ten years ago, I realized it was me! The Main Street in this community is my mission, and the people are my motivation.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Perhaps the biggest accomplishment is still being open! On our Fifth store anniversary, we implemented an award that we give to the person or organization that has served the community well the preceding year. We give a monetary gift to their favorite project. Our winners have just been merry people who have made smiles everywhere they go, to the local doctor who provided a CT machine from his own pocket to the sheriff, and more. This year's recipient is WS, an organization that seeks to restore and improve community building and traditions such as the Christmas Parade, tree-lighting, and more.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Being willing to give ALL of your time and sometimes going without any payment. Sucking it up when you make a poor decision.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Pray!
- Create good local relationships and resources for banking and more.
- Establish good work and family boundaries early and keep them.
